Basic Information
Tannic acid is comprised of 2 compounds. Gallic acid molecules and glucose. Gallic acid is an organic acid. It is found in nuts, trees, bark, and other plants. Gallic acids chemical formula is C6H2(OH)3COOH. Highly used in pharmaceuticals being an antioxidant. Gallic acid acts as an anti-fungal anti-viral. Tannic acid bonds using hydrolysis. Hydrolysis is a reaction in which a hydroxyl gains another hydrogen to form a water molecule. Tannic acid is found in oak leaves. It has protective effects on your skin. Tannic acid has also been found to be harmful to the body as well. All though it naturally occurs in nature it has been found that, in doses above 2.0 grams, large ulcers and lesions form. Tannic acid is also has sever damaging effects on the liver. Another study showed cows that consumed large amounts of tannic acid gave birth to babies with birth defects.
History Of Tannic Acid
Through my research it seams as if tannic acid has been a compound known throughout the scientific community. I can not find one specific person that discovered tannic acid. Nor could i find a specific origin.
People have tried to use tannic acid for: cold sores, fever blisters, diaper rash, minor burns, and sun burn. But it may be ineffective. Tannic acid is effective for treating burn wounds but the total effects are not clear. It is also used for tanning leather, clearing wine of impurities, treating diarrhea, treating ulcers, and toothaches.
Reactions
When introduced to the mouth, tannic acid penetrates the cells and acts as an astringent. Tannic acid also acts like a coagulant.
